Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is an alternative to the more aggressive laser resurfacing treatment. Without ablating the epidermal layer, IPL treats the lower dermal tissues and can correct such problems as fine wrinkles, blemishes, and other discolorations. It’s considered a gentler treatment than traditional fractional laser resurfacing, and the results are generally long-lasting. Until recently, IPL was not a suitable treatment for those individuals with darker skin. That’s because the frequencies of light energy used in IPL laser treatment are absorbed by darker tissues. Today, however, a greater number of individuals can benefit from IPL laser treatments because the newer instruments can be more finely calibrated. To learn more, schedule a consultation with us.
Using Light Energy
Depending on the strength and wavelength of the light emitted from a laser or similar device, certain tissues will either reflect the light, absorb it, or let it pass through. If the skin or subdermal tissues is darker, meaning it contains chromophores in the cells, it will readily absorb the light energy and heat up. This slightly damages the tissues, and the body responds by sending nutrients to accelerate a replacement process.
Lasers emit a single frequency of light, and it’s tightly focused. It’s strong enough to cauterize the epidermis. However, if the areas of concern lie a bit deeper, such as scarring, rosacea, or melasma, IPL laser treatment may be a better treatment option. That’s because the energy is absorbed deeper down. This energy absorption shrinks collagen and capillaries, the result being a lightening of those troublesome dark spots and an increase in collagen production.
The ideal candidate for IPL laser treatments is a mature adult experiencing age-related skin problems that result in discoloration and fine wrinkles. Acne scars and injury scars that exist in the lower dermal layers, rosacea, age spots, and even freckles can be treated with a series of IPL laser treatments.
We usually schedule a series of treatments for our clients, spaced about a week or so apart. During the consultation, we determine the correct frequency range of light by looking at the skin tone and thickness. A treatment session that addresses a large area, perhaps the entire facial surface, should take only minutes to complete.
An IPL laser treatment can dramatically improve the texture and overall tone of your facial skin. To learn more, schedule your personal consultation with us at Exquisite MD Spa in San Diego. Contact our office today to book an appointment.
